Model Relationships are a Reality in the Industry
Model relationships are a regularity in the industry due to an understanding of the profession and working in close proximity. Pixie Lott and Oliver Cheshire seem the perfect model couple as they pose on the red carpet at the BAFTA Awards after meeting back in 2010 at a catwalk show. Pixie wears an exquisite black gown whilst Oliver looks sharp in his tailored suit. Smiling happily together, both models (Pixie was a professional model before her pop star debut and actively models to promote her new material) met whilst signed for the same agency; a natural development, which is familiar in the industry.
Many large establishments cater for female and male models, which are regularly cast for shoots and catwalk shows where both genders appear. Therefore, it is easy to meet models of the opposite sex on a daily basis. Shoots can last for a long time with regular periods of waiting around, which gives times for friendships to build as you find out about one another. Also, appearing in a campaign together could involve posing closely sometimes invading intimate areas allowing for models to become familiar very quickly. To avoid awkward situations talking and sharing a joke over the pose can ease the tension of modelling so closely with strangers. It may appear that you are paired together on many occasions due to your look or signing with the same agency and therefore a relationship will naturally develop.
Model relationships are not frowned upon in the industry as long as you ensure it does not effect your work. Being overly affectionate, jealous or argumentative will negatively tinge your relationship with employees and your reputation within the industry. Clients do not wish to be dealing with a hysterical model who is upset over an argument or become in the middle of a rift or kissing session leaving the situation extremely awkward for those around you. It is important to remain professional at all times to avoid making a bad impression and holding up the shoot. When entering a relationship it is important to be aware that you are mixing your professional career with your personal life yet must keep these separate when at work as much as possible.
The benefits of having a model partner is their understanding of the industry as they are experiencing it themselves on a daily basis. The long hours, early starts and trips away should not become an issue as they understand how it works completely and at times will have the same schedule. Forming a relationship with a partner who works 9-5 may be tricky as your schedules may clash considerably. Models who are in relationships together can provide support and advice based on their own experiences. Rejection is high in the industry and your partner will have experienced their own form of criticism at some stage in their career and will hopefully have the right words to say to provide comfort at particular difficult times. Their words of encouragement and support will give you the confidence to continue to reach your goal. Also, their contacts may need a model that suits your requirements and therefore, could secure new roles via your relationship. However, it is extremely important to support your partner with the progress of their career rather than becoming jealous if they are finding more roles than yourself and of a bigger status. It is easy to become competitive yet it could easily come between you causing arguments. Therefore, hide ugly, envious feelings and respond with a happy smile. Opportunities will arise when the time is right and it is important to remain patient.
